Black-eyed mugshot of Lancaster County suspect gets national attention, disbelief

A police mug shot taken in Lancaster County, S.C., is drawing attention across the country for what appears to be a blond woman with black eyes.
The mug shot is of 24-year-old Morgan Joyce Varn, who faces charges of kidnapping, armed robbery and property damage in Lancaster County. She remained in the Lancaster County jail Friday without bond.
It is the kind of case that typically doesn’t get attention beyond county lines, but the story was being picked up across the nation Friday due to Varn’s striking image: Full head of blond hair, pale forehead covered in tattoos, and the whites of her eyes appearing to be black and reflective like glass.
Social media commenters quickly picked up on the photo, questioning if it was faked.
A Las Vegas TV station, FOX5 Las Vegas, posted it on Facebook with the headline: “Here’s a Mugshot to Haunt Your Nightmares.”
One Web site, Tigerdroppings.com, set up a discussion group of the case under the title: “The Devil Went Down To South Carolina - 2 Charged With Kidnapping.”
Among the many comments was a debate as to whether Varn’s black eyes were the result of a cosmetic procedure known as eye tattooing, in which a dyeing agent is applied directly to the eye.
Some found the black eyes alarming.
“Call a priest,” said one commenter.
Varn was arrested after a SWAT situation near Indian Land, S.C., with a 23-year-old man named Jonathan Mikael Robinson. He was charged with kidnapping, armed robbery and weapons charges.

The body of a missing 18-year-old Rock Hill girl has been found, a York County sheriff’s spokesman said Monday morning.
The body of Jamie Lee Allison Magras was found at 10:50 a.m. Monday in the woods near North Rock Hill Church, said York County Sheriff’s Spokesman Trent Faris, who gave a statement about the case to the media. Faris said there are no reports that the family attended the church.
“It’s not the outcome that anybody wanted from this,” he said.
Magras, 18, was to graduate from Northwestern High School this spring. She had last been seen early Friday and left a note at home saying she was going out in the early hours of the morning. She took a few items of clothing and her driver’s license, family said.
Faris said no foul play is suspected at this time. An investigation is ongoing.
Magras lived about a mile from the church were her body was found, Faris said. She was found near a creek, just off Mount Gallant Road, he said.
Faris said hundreds of tips came in during the search.
“From Saturday night until this morning, we were still receiving tips,” he said. “One of those tips was why we came back to this area and searched this area.”
The York County coroner has not released any details about her death.
After she left the home, she never returned, said her stepfather, Robert Maietta. Magras leaving from home at night was not normal behavior, Maietta said.
Magras walked out of her home on her own accord and was not abducted, Faris said. “We are investigating what happened after that.”
The family lives northwest of Rock Hill, near the southern edge of Lake Wylie.
Magras was a senior at Northwestern, and has siblings at Dutchman Creek Middle School, Faris said. The school district had counselors on site to help students, he said. A native of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Magras was set to graduate in a few weeks. She recently went to the Northwestern prom and had not talked of any problems at home or at school, family said.
During the search, her family said Magras was on medication to prevent seizures.
Several social media sites and Facebook sites aimed at finding missing people, especially children, had linked to the search including Faith Family America, Missing Kids, Missing in South Carolina and the Aware Foundation.
“There was an outpouring of support and an outcry to assist this family,” Faris said.
Deputies had been investigating since Friday, with assistance from state and federal agents. The initial search included a helicopter and K-9 units, but police have scaled back the search in hopes of new information.
K-9 units worked the scene from Friday morning through the overnight hours of Saturday, Faris said.
